What are the best festivals to schedule my visit to India around? I’m most interested in visiting when the weather is the most pleasant.

I’d recommend scheduling a visit during Holi (the festival of colours), which takes place during March and marks the start of spring in India. There are usually plenty of different regional events going on and people throw brightly coloured powder and liquids at each other in the street (I’m sure you’ve seen the pictures) so be prepared to roll up your sleeves and get involved! Celebrations in the big city’s can get a little boisterous so you might find village festivities a bit less intimidating to join in with.
When are you coming?
My favorite is the Kite festival in Ahmedabad, Jan 16th is the big day each year.
I guess that it`s nice that the staff elbows in ahead of the proletariat. That way I can comment on Allison`s post.
Holi is actually (unbeknownst to most Westerners) a 2-day festival, culminating with the color day. The first day of the festival is a quiet, at-home, family celebration.
“Dye Day” (my term) is a wonderful day to get very drunk and see how close you can get to girls (preferably 20yo Swedish ones). I don`t recommend any girls, especially ones on their own, to go out on Holi.
