entry to China from Vietnam by train-visa query

Avatar Image

My friend and I are going by train from Hanoi to Beijing. We already have China visas. I will spend two weeks in Vietnam before we head to China. My friend is already in Hanoi and will only have one day left on his Vietnam visa before we catch the train as he will have been out the for nearly 3 months.

Rumour has it that the Chinese authorities only let you in if you have at least 3 remaining days on your visa for the country you are entering from. Is this true? If so, he will have to extend his Vietnam visa. We spoke to the China visa agency in the UK given we both have British passports but they were really vague, telling me that entry to China is at the discretion of the local border authorities and that they could only suggest we ask elsewhere, and that a having a visa in your passport doesnt guarantee you entry.

Does anyone have any experience with this please?

Hanoi to Beijing is only the start of our journey as we are heading all the way back to the UK by train. As such, we need it to get off to a good start! Thanks for your help :-)

Hi Lindsay,

The RG team hasn’t heard of any reports of problems crossing into China by land, in terms of having at least 3 days left on your visa for the country you’re entering from, as long as you have a Chinese visa before you reach the border. However, I strongly recommend checking with the Chinese embassy in Hanoi before you leave to make sure that it’s just a rumour. They may well still say that entry to China is at the discretion of the local border authorities (because it is!), but they should also be able to tell you if a specific new rule has been put in place.

Chinese Embassy in Hanoi: Consular Office
Address: 44, Hoang Dieu Street, Ha Noi
Office Hours: 8.30-11am, 2.30–5pm Monday–Friday
Tel: +84 4 38235569
Fax: +84 4 37341181

Jealous of the exciting train journey you’re going to have!

Helen.
