Can anyone recommend a decent place to stay in Edinburgh? Somewhere central but not too pricey would be great – and i’d prefer to avoid a chain. I’m thinking a double room for £60–£80 a night.

Also – someone on Twitter suggested you try Airbnb for somewhere to stay. I did it in Canterbury for the first time a few weeks ago and it was great! We had a whole flat to ourselves right in the centre for £40 a night. There is a booking fee but it’s all very transparent so you’ll know the final price before you book.
It’s a cool way to support locals and bypass the large hotel/hostel chains too I’m going to try and use it as much as possible in the future.
Thanks loads Lottie! We’d looked at Airbnb and some of the places did look amazing (especially the entire apartments)… but sadly, all were booked! The Grasmmarket looks ace, but we already booked a double here:
Will update the thread with feedback once we’ve been… (it’s super cheap and looks pretty good!).
It is a chain but I stayed in the St Christopher’s Inn, which had very cheap ensuite double rooms (I think we paid around £30 for a night but the room was tiny – I’m sure they’ve got better rooms for more money) and there was a free breakfast. It’s got a decent bar and is right in the centre by the train station. Perfect location and good if you’re not too fussed about the room – it was very clean and pleasant, but nothing to rave about.
Have a good time!
I like http://crispy-hotels.com where you can find best prices for hotel and hostel rooms. You can than narrow down your search according to your price range and have a look at the map to find a good spot.
If you are only looking for hostels, http://www.hostelworld.com might also be a good place to search as they are well connected to hostels and you can find recommendations as well.
Well, both sites do work not only for Edinburgh so it’s a good chance to find nice and cheap accommodation in a lot of cities around the world…
