Hi Larry,

Driving around Thailand can be relatively straightforward. Major routes are signposted in English (although there aren’t any good-quality English-language maps), and there’s not usually much traffic on the roads, especially in the northeast and the south.

Make sure you sort out insurance with the rental agency – the big, reputable dealers are your best bet, such as Avis, Budget or National, or one that’s recommended by TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand). Hiring a car that has GPS might come in handy to get around the lack of good English maps. As you’re landing in Bangkok, you can rent a car from Suvarnabhumi airport, which is on the outskirts of the city and from where it’s pretty simple to get to the major regional highways. Petrol costs about 36 Baht per litre, and do make sure to check with the rental company which kind of petrol you need. It’s also worth carefully looking over the car to see if there are already any bumps or scratches on it, to avoid being charged for any damage you didn’t cause.

Destinations depends quite heavily on how long you have and what you want to see!
