Found this great article which covers all the legal practical advice:

http://www.theguardian.com/travel/2010/jun/12/independent-teenage-holidays

I know that I went on an 18-30s holiday when I was 17 and didn’t have any trouble (it was to Ibiza and wasn’t as out of control as the TV documentaries would have you think!!).

Do they want guaranteed sunshine? If not, there are some amazing youth hostels around Ireland and the UK. Loads going on in cities like Edinburgh, Glasgow and Dublin… (though of course drinking isn’t legal over here!).

The legal drinking age is 17 in Cyprus and Malta, but they are more likely to find cheap deals to Spain or Greece… I’d always recommend booking flights and hotels (or hostels) separately to save a few pounds. Check out independent transfers from the airport for them (most places have minibuses running back and forth) and I’d probably book insurance on their behalf!

If you let us know what they’re keen on, I’m sure the RG community would have some more specific destinations to recommend (beaches? surfing? nightlife? whitewater rafting? city break? all inclusive?…). Hope they have fun whatever they do!

By the way, check out this article for first time travel inspiration:

Rough Guides have a Rough Guide to First Time Europe, as well as Europe on a Budget!! Both great books for setting off alone… :-)
